Crick in the Neck: 2 Simple Stretches to Ease and Prevent Neck Muscle Spasms

It always happens to me in the middle of the night.

A big deadline is quickly approaching so I spend extra hours stressed out and hunched over my computer. When I finally climb into bed to get some sleep I toss and turn trying to get comfortable. That is when I get zapped. Ow! My neck! By morning my neck hurts so bad that I can hardly roll out of bed and I can't turn my head at all without breathtaking pain.
Sound familiar?

Muscle spasms and torn ligaments are the causes of most neck cricks which feel like eye-popping pain in the neck and shoulder area. You can self-diagnose the cause of your neck pain; if gentle stretching provides some pain relief then it is a muscle spasm. If stretching makes the pain sharper the problem is ligament damage; if this is the case, stop stretching.

A crick in the neck caused by muscle spasms will generally resolve on its own in a few days but there are 2 simple stretches that speed up my recovery time. If practiced regularly, these exercises can prevent this type of neck injury.

Palm Extension
The Palm Extension exercise is a three part stretch for the upper back, shoulder and neck muscles.

Stand up straight with your feet at a comfortable distance apart. Intertwine your fingers in front of you and then raise your arms straight out in front of you to about shoulder level. Turn the palms of your hands away from you and then very slowly and gently press your palms outward. Allow your shoulders to round forward as you stretch. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds and breathe deeply.

Relax your stretch but maintain the outward facing palm position and lift your arms up high so that your shoulders are by your ears. Gently press your palms upward and outward. Hold for 30 seconds.

Relax your stretch and allow your arms, fingers still entwined, to fall in front of you. With palms facing outward, gently press your palms down toward the floor. Hold for 30 seconds and don't forget to breathe.

Push Down
The Push Down exercise stretches the muscles that run along the top of your shoulders and the side of your neck.

Stand up straight with your arms at your sides, feet at hip distance apart and your chin parallel to the floor. With the palm of your right hand facing the ground, lift your right arm allowing your elbow to bend outward and bring your right hand up to your armpit. Keep your palm facing down. Imagine that there is a heavy spring at your side under your right palm that you want to push into a tight coil. Push down hard on the imaginary spring until your arm is fully extended at your side. With your arm fully extended, palm still pressing down, stretch your neck and shoulder by gently bringing your left ear as close to your left shoulder as possible. Do not rotate your head. Breathe in deeply and exhale. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds.

Switch sides. Bring your left hand up into your armpit and then push down, palm facing the floor while lowering your right ear toward your right shoulder. Hold the position for 30 seconds and breathe.

You should repeat these stretches several times a day until the muscle spasm stops. If at first it hurts too much to hold the stretches for 30 seconds, then try holding for 15 seconds or as long as it is comfortable for you. You may also find that you can hold these stretches longer if you do them right after a hot shower or after applying a warm compress to your neck.

Remember to be gentle with yourself and to breathe. Your body can't relax when you hold your breath.

Hair Care: The No-Poo Method for Shiny Hair

My blue eyes turned green with sheer jealousy when shampoo ads came on the TV. I envied the beautiful women swinging and flipping their luxuriously long shiny hair. Their glossy locks were annoyingly perfect, without a single split end or frizz to be found. My hair was not so perfect or shiny.

As a beauty product addict, I snatched up every shampoo that promised me shiny healthy hair. I bought expensive brands, inexpensive brands, sulfate-free products, amino acid enhanced, no-lather, non-surfactant, all natural, and even just for blonde hair products. My hair was still not swing or flip worthy.

One night I ran out of shampoo and day after day I kept forgetting to buy more. I was surprised to find that my hair didn't look or smell unwashed even after a few days with no shampoo. After a week of no shampoo my hair was soft and glossy! The solution to my dull hair dilemma was to stop using a product.

The No-Poo Method of hair care is simple; don't use shampoo.

As you stand in the shower use your fingertips to massage your scalp using just warm water. This feels so good! The massage loosens up hair products and dirt so they can rinse away. It also helps your natural oils spread from the hair follicles all through your hair giving your hair a nice sheen. For normal or dry hair, conditioner is still a must. If you have long hair, collect your hair as if you are making a pony tail and apply your conditioner of choice to the pony tail section and rinse as usual. If your hair is short, simply apply conditioner to the ends. That's it!

If you have naturally oily hair or skin you may doubt that this No-Poo Method is for you. The first 7-10 days without shampoo your hair may feel oily to you. If you feel the need to disguise unwashed hair, tie your hair back in a pretty ponytail or push your hair away from your face with a headband. But don't give up! After the first week your scalp will not produce as much oil and the oily feeling will clear up and your hair will look and feel amazing.

I have to admit that once every 3 weeks or so I massage a little bit of apple cider vinegar into the roots of the hair around my face and let it rinse though the rest of my hair. Be careful to not let vinegar get in your eyes. I am a runner and a swimmer and it is not unusual for me to come in from gardening with real dirt in my hair, so sometimes my hair needs some cleansing. The apple cider vinegar will wash out dirt and any leftover residue from gel and hair spray.

These days I swing and flip my super shiny locks in every reflective surface I pass. But don't hate me because I'm beautiful! Try the No-Poo Method and before long you will be swinging and flipping your spectacularly shiny hair, too. And use the money you're now saving to buy that juicy new lip gloss you've had your eye on.

Limit shampooing your hair to no more than twice a week., shampooing strips your hair of its natural oils.
Use a conditioner every time after you shampoo to re-moisturize your hair.
Use a leave-in conditioner like Bumble and Bumble Leave in Conditioner on your hair daily or every other day.
Use a shampoo and conditioner that is specifically geared towards curly hair.
Avoid using narrow toothed combs and brushes, use wide-toothed combs instead which has less of a tendency to cause breakage and frizzing.
To detangle your hair, in the shower start with your hair moist and conditioned (which will protect it from breakage), use your fingers to begin the untangling then finish with a wide toothed comb starting from the end going up finishing at the root of the hair. Then rinse your head with water and try to retain half of the conditioner in your hair. If you try to detangle your hair when it's dry, you will cause it to frizz.
Let your hair aid dry to reduce frizzing, avoid brushing and using a towel to dry your hair. If you need to your hair to dry quickly, blot your hair with a towel, but do not rub it.
Deep condition your hair once a month or more to re-moisturize your scalp and hair.
Use a small amount of styling product with moisturizing ingredient(s) in it to keep your hair from frizzing when your hair is still slightly moist and gently style with your finger. Apply the styling one section so that it is equally distributed.
Avoid playing with your hair or touching it as much as possible, the more friction that occurs on your hair will cause it to tangle and/or frizz.

Tips For Beautiful Eyelashes

Don't want to use harsh adhesives with false lashes or lash extensions on your delicate eyelashes? How is a girl to get longer, fuller, darker lashes naturally? Read on:
  1. Invest in a quality eyelash curler. Using an eyelash curler before applying mascara makes lashes more visible and gives a longer appearance.
    1. Be sure not to clamp down too tightly as to "cut" lashes.
    2. Always curl BEFORE applying mascara.
    3. Keep curler clean. Wipe down after each application.
  2. Use a eyelash separator after applying mascara to remove clumps and improve appearance of lashes. DO NOT USE A SAFETY PIN. This is very dangerous and not as effective as separator brushes specifically designed for this purpose. Eyelash separator brushes are inexpensive and can readily be found in the drug store.
  3. Remove all makeup thoroughly each night before bed. Makeup can be drying. By removing makeup each night before bed prevents the lashes from becoming too dry and brittle which will cause breakage.
    1. While removing eye makeup use an eye-makeup-remover designed especially for the delicate eye area.
    2. Remove makeup with a gentle touch, so you do not pull or damage the delicate skin in the eye contour area.
  4. Condition lashes nightly before bed.
    1. Using an eyelash conditioning serum hydrates the delicate eyelashes from becoming brittle, damaged and broken. Look for one that is clinically tested and formulated with ingredients that promote hair growth.
  5. Diet and supplements.

    1. Mascara does not have a long shelf life. The constant push of the wand in and out of the tube exposes the product to bacteria which over time can produce infections.
    2. Drug store bran mascara's are often of high quality and you won't mind tossing the tube after 3 months even if there is more product left. For the health of your delicate eyes this point isn't negotiable.
  13. False eyelashes and eyelash extensions are applied with glues that are drying to your natural lashes, making them susceptible to damage and breaking. Save Falsies for only special occasions.
  14. Be wary of home treatments. Some well intentioned friends may advise using petroleum jelly, castor or olive oil or even glycerin. Remember we are talking about the delicate eye area. Eyes are extremely sensitive and prone to infection when exposed to bacteria and dirt.
    1. Unless you are using a brand new bottle of said home remedy with an applicator for your eyes and only use this one bottle only for your eyes you are taking a BIG risk of exposing your eyes to infection and damage.

Tips For Tighter, Smoother Skin

1.Treat your skin to a Steam

2. Go Sulfate free.
Sulfate or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is used in many cosmetic and hair products because of sought after rich lather and foam. But are the benefits worth the risks? This chemical is very drying and irritating to skin and hair, stripping away the natural body oils that keep sin moist.

3. Be Cautious With Home Remedies.
Have you heard of these popular home remedies??
Take a raw egg and crack it saving only the egg white. Add the white layers that are stuck to the inside of the shell mix and apply over your face. As the egg dries you will feel it tighten the skin. Leave on for 10-15 minutes and rinse with tepid water.
Mash a banana to a paste and spread all over your face. Leave the banana mask on skin for 10-15 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water.
Why waste your used coffee grinds in the morning, use them as an revitalizing facial mask to wake up and firm skin. Mix 1/4 cup used coffee grounds with one egg white and spread it all over the face. Allow mask to dry 10-15 minutes or so, then rinse off with warm water.
Many old wives tales claim to either mix Prep H with your daily moisturizer or even with Visine to pat around the eye area for firmness. The Visine version helps with blemishes too.
